It is normal for our weather forecast to have rain in it every single day. Most days, it doesn't rain. If it does, it's usually a pop-up afternoon thunderstorm. However, if you get stuck in the middle of a significant, multi-day rain, you're going to want some ideas to keep your kids (or yourselves!) entertained. Here are some ideas of indoor activities that your family may enjoy.
Emerald Coast Science Center
If you have inquisitive kids that like hands-on activities, this is a great stop. There are both indoor and outdoor activities, with enough to do to burn half a day easily. There is a playground, and animals to interact with as well.
Silver Sands Premium Outlets
Silver Sands Premium Outlets is Northwest Florida's ultimate outlet shopping experience, featuring over 100 stores, plus restaurants, snack shops, and a playground. Located in Sandestin, this is about 15 miles from Waterscape/Fort Walton Beach. It does get busy during rain periods so be sure to take your umbrella to get in and out of the parking lot dry. While on the subject of shopping, don't forget TJ Maxx, and craft stores...which may in fact lead you to some OTHER way to spend your day.
Air Force Armament Museum
Experience the legacy of military aviation with our extensive collection of aircraft and armament. Dive into the stories behind the technology and bravery that shaped American skies. There are large airplanes outside for observation (just take an umbrella), but of course, the museum is inside and covered. One of the best things about this museum: entrance is FREE for everyone!
Wild Willy's Arcade
Wild Willy's is an AMAZING attraction with go-karts, very well done putt-putt golf, and a top-of-the-line obstacle course. It's a great stop, even in GOOD weather. However, it made THIS list because it also includes a 16,000 square foot arcade which is fun for the whole family. There is also a Tiny Adventures game area for kids age 5 and under. This is located about a mile to the east of Waterscape. If it was sunny, I would suggest that you walk. But hey, this is an article for a rainy day, so Honey, get the car!
Urban Air Trampoline Park
Ready to jump, soar, race, climb, and play? Get unlimited fun for the whole family at Urban Air. It is ultimate indoor adventure park where kids of all ages (and kids at heart) can explore thrilling attractions, challenge their body and mind, and most importantly…forget about the weather. Painting with a Twist
Just over the bridge from Waterscape is a super fun activity that no one EVER thinks about during a rainy day. Make your own painting! These are artist led classes, fun for the whole family, and you get to take your treasures home with you. I have done this with my friends, and it was fun. They have classes scheduled regularly. Thrift Stores and Flea Markets
Is treasure hunting your thing? Both Destin and Fort Walton Beach have many great thrift shops and Flea Markets. On many occasions I have spent an entire rainy day with friends having fun trying on "new" outfits (of course expanding my comfort zone LOL), checking out antiques, and just exploring the things of yesteryear. In Fort Walton Beach, De'France Flea Market is a great stop with TONS of booths, and it got so big, they actually now have TWO locations, and both are worth your time.
Read and Take a Nap
Don't overlook one of the biggest reasons you came on vacation...to rest and relax. Think of the rain as your calling card to stay in your PJs all day long. Grab a book from a local bookstore, open the doors to hear and smell the rain, and just let yourself doze in and out of your temporary reality. Turn on the beach music for added relaxation. Maybe bake some cookies with the kids. And while we are on the subject of reading...Fort Walton Beach has a pretty cool library and every time I walk through the door, I waste two hours. It's yours...go get it!
Don't overlook the obvious
Don't overlook this tried-and-true-trifecta....Skating, Bowling, and the Movies. This isn't off the charts exciting, but it's definitely something to experience in a new place, where family memories can be made, all while you pass the time waiting on those sunny skies.
What about getting pampered?
There are many places around town to get facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures. You would never want to miss beach time for these things...so this is the perfect opportunity to schedule some relaxation back into your vacation.
Art Gallery
Do you like Art Galleries? I admit I don't fully appreciate art (I do math...we have different understandings, LOL). However, I stepped into this art gallery and I had a really good time. I think we were in there for 2 hours looking at everything. There are tons of paintings, and some small crafts, and even jewelry. I found several things I wanted to purchase. They even had things for just a few bucks. I think this is a fun stop and I actually would like to go back. Pair it with some of the other things on this list. Your day will go by so quickly.
Are you here on an adult trip?
I almost hesitate to include this in the article...but... don't overlook the fun in DAY DRINKING with your friends. The Island Hotel (Okaloosa Island) has an awesome indoor bar. Further, if you can get down to the Grotto, you can sit behind the waterfall at the bar under the pool. This isn't widely known, and is a GEM! It's super fun...ask me how I know. McGuire's in Destin has homemade Irish Beer. WoodFoot in Fort Walton Beach has craft beer. Fubar across from Waterscape has an indoor waterfront bar. And don't forget Pepper's BOGO margaritas! Make sure you use Uber or Lyft to get from place to place. Please do NOT start out in a car. Your trip may not end as fun as it starts. 😂🚓👮🚨
